Why the early rounds feel different from the final stages
The first round is organised as six knockout paths. Each tie is decided in one match, with extra time and penalties if required. The lower-league club, or the lower-ranked club when both come from the same division, is generally given the home match.
That gives J2 and J3 supporters a clear reason to follow the cup: one win can bring a larger club to their ground, and a short knockout path can create a run that the league table would never predict.
Eight clubs change the rhythm of the competition
The six first-round path winners join two seeded clubs to form the prime round. Quarter-finals and semi-finals are played home and away, so supporters must read the aggregate result across two matches rather than treating the first leg as a complete tie.
The final returns to a single match at a neutral venue. A draw after 90 minutes leads to extra time and, if still level, a penalty shootout.
The name changed, but the competition continues
The cup began in 1992 and was long known through different sponsor names. For 2026/27 it changed from the J.League YBC Levain Cup to the J.League Yamazaki Biscuits Levain Cup, with a new logo.
The sponsor wording is part of the official title, not evidence of a separate new cup. Historical records before the rebrand still belong to the same J.League league-cup lineage.
