For 2026/27, the expanded ACL Elite has 32 league-stage clubs split into East and West regions. Each club plays eight different regional opponents — four home and four away — before the top eight in each region enter the round of 16. ACL Two has 32 clubs in eight groups of four, with home-and-away round robins. Japan's domestic results determine priority for the places, but AFC slot allocation and club licensing also matter.

What sits behind the number
ACL Elite starts with regional league tables
The 2026/27 Elite league stage has one East table and one West table. A club plays eight matches against eight different opponents in its region, split evenly between home and away. It does not play every regional opponent twice.
The top eight clubs in each region advance. The round of 16 stays within East and West and is played over two legs; the remaining finals are a centralised knockout stage. That is why the travel pattern and the table look different from a domestic league.
ACL Two keeps a familiar four-team group format
ACL Two's 32 group-stage clubs are drawn into eight groups of four, divided between East and West. Every club plays the other three teams at home and away, making six group matches.
Calling it the second tier describes the AFC competition level, not the domestic division of every participant. A strong top-flight club can be in ACL Two because of its association's allocation or domestic qualification route.
How a Japanese club gets there
J.League and cup results create the domestic priority order, while AFC allocation defines how many direct and indirect places Japan receives. For 2026/27, Japan received three direct ACL Elite places, two indirect Elite places and one direct ACL Two place before overlap rules were applied.
An indirect place means a club must survive a preliminary match to reach the Elite league stage. A club that loses that play-off may move into ACL Two under the applicable regulations. This is why a simple 'top three qualify' sentence can become wrong after cup winners and duplicate qualifications are resolved.
